Woolworths
1984

What on earth ??!! Suppose it was an early incarnation of joint profiteering between public sector and private; a step up from payola perhaps......?
Add in City Life, March '84.
Actually a band I reaaaally wish I'd seen were X- Ray Spex. It was quite eerie/ coincidental that they released "Warrior in Woolworths" b.w. " Highly Inflammable" before the big fire in Woollies, Piccadilly in '78 in which several people lost their lives. I'd forgotten about that, but it's not really the kind of memory you'd choose to carry around.
Going out on a limb, Joni Mitchell sang on" Otis and Marlena' from '76, "...muslims stick up Washington.."; a bit kind of Twighlight Zone-ish; not something you could make anything of though....
Other stuff in this issue:- A full page article on "Street Hockey; the fastest growing Sport in the North West"; don't remember that / Interview with ex City stalwart George Heslop, now landlord of the City Gates pub on Hyde Rd.in which Ardwick F.C. were formed in 1887; and they of course became the Proper team.
At the flicks, "Videodrome" with Debbie Harry; early days special effects and probably very rudimentary but I remember thinking at the time, how do they do that? (a bit where James Woods pulls a V.H.S. / Betamax video out from somebody's stomach. A D.V.D. well maybe, but.....etc.)....
"We of the Never Never" at The Aaben; lots of other stuff.......

“I saw X-Ray Spex at the Apollo, but can't remember when it was, it's such a sad day losing Polly today breaks my heart. Can anyone remember the date they played the Apollo, must have been 1979 but when exactly, if only I wasn't such a throwaway punk & had kept my ticket, I was wearing the pink X-ray Spex t-shirt I 'won' from Vibes record shop.
I too remember the Woolies fire, now you've mentioned it. Warrior in Woolworths is still a great record though.”
