Last of these Hac. “What’s On” flyers....Job done! This for Sept/Oct ’84.Looking at this has madeth me mad! I don’t recall that Studio One night at all but I obviously knew about it as I’ve biro-ed all over it and so am “spewin!” as those quaint antipodeans like to say. What on earth was I thinking; chance of a lifetime....what an eedgit etc...Must have been something important going on at the time; hope I had the plague or some other such suitable excuse! I’ve got a few tracks by Michigan and Smiley, “Diseases” probably being the best known, riding over the top of the much utilised "mad mad' riddim; Killer! with the likes of Yellowman, Little John and that burning light Tenor Saw , extinguished all too soon. And although with hindsight it’s certainly sexist, the P.C. thing wasn’t around to keep an eye on us at that time and I was either too young or couldn’t be arsed to care. Mind you, by today's standards of some hip hop and R "n B lyrics it's tame by comparison. There was also an electro-ey sounding track which was kind of unusual at the time called “One Love Jam Down” and I’m sure if I gave it a spin I would dig it once and again...Yeah man, stuffed up big stylee on that one! Ah well...je ne regrette sod all, except perhaps for that.....
Anyway there’s some good stuff on here as I look through it. Yes indeed. Wouldn’t have minded Run D.M.C. (not Lloyd Cole though; all that uber intense passion with that reedy tremelo voice, bad poetry and student bedsit angst... I think I may have been at home that night , knitting mini wookies with some old pubic hair that I found....much more fun! (ooh bit harsh!)
There must be hundreds, if not thousands of these “What’s On” flyers so there ought to be national concerted drawer-rifling drive to flush them out. It truly reflects the best of what 80’s music had to offer, and God knows there was an awful lot of dross to go along with it; much of which is being revisited by today’s youth; i,e. The music of the decade you were born into. It seems to be an emerging and rapidly re-occuring pattern. I actually heard a truly, truly dreadful full-on techno version of Patti Smith's "Because The Night" the other day, pumping out of a muscle car pulled up next to me at the lights at a 1000 decibels ,with some 18+ aspiring gangsta-lean wanna be at the controls;should have had his licence revoked for bad taste, if for nothing else! happens a lot round these here parts......Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, as someone once remarked.....
