Platt Fields (Festival)
2nd August 1985

There were a couple of these festivals round a similar time and in my head (like many things ) ,they’re mixed up. I know at one it rained and didn’t at t’other. I wonder if the A.C.R./ Jazz Defectors/ Kalima triumvirate had time for a costume change? There was /is an antique clothing museum on the Wilmslow Rd. side of the park so those kimonos and cavalier costumes could have come in handy. Anyway that’s an impressive line-up of local talent with the yoof being political in the a.m. and carefree in the p.m..Quite rightly....
Used to go to the Manchester show in Platt Fields most years when we were sproglings; cheap day out. With Piccadilly Radio and it’s assorted wally DJ types doing a live broadcast from the show. I remember a stall which had a live bee hive; that was about as exciting as it ever got, oh yeah and hummingbirds too, plus real live wallabies to stare at in a mini zoo, same as in Chorlton Park....poor fellas. Just remembering one time being out on the lake in a rowing boat and I accidently smacked an ore into this lad’s hand, rowing the other way; wouldn’t have happened with those peddle boat types like they had in Poundswick park! Anyway, with blood pouring from his hand , him and his mate( they were much bigger and older of course ), were gonna kill me. Well we got to the side as fast as we could and legged it before they could get us. I don’t think I went back in that park for 10 years! Similar things at Bellevue on the bumper cars; Wythenshawe Park fair; always just seemed to be gangs....It’s probably just the same now but more so...Oh the sweet bird of youth...
Nevermind, music always seemed to save the day......
I've noticed Terry and Gerry and Kantomanto cropping up a few times so added them to the list.
