Lurv these playlist things; it sparks off the jukebox in me head. Why I never saw Fela Kuti I’ll never know.....I know Chris Crooks played at The Russell downstairs for a long time after this and ran a great night. There usually was an M.C. or two hyping it up on one of those remote mikes which was probably the first time I recall coming across that. You'd be struttin' your stuff in the crowd, hearing the M.C. chat and suddenly it's the bloke next to you doin' the business. “Stacker Humanoid” and “Voodoo Ray” seemed to be firm favourites; countless others......Wish I had a playlist from then, just for the curiosity factor.. Yeah all the times at The Russell in it’s many phases and over the years was always good, and Lloyd on the door so there was never any probs getting in. I know it's long gone but there definitely (!!) should be one of those Blue Historic Plaques on the site where it stood; real history on that ground.( There's a crowd scene near the beginning of Alan Bleasdale's T.V. series "G.B.H" with Michael Palin, Robert Lindsey and Julie Walters which is filmed outside the club. I remember they sent round a notice to ask people to turn up to be in the crowd;I know Bugsy who worked there, is in it. Also Tony Wilson did one of those pieces to camera outside the entrance prob circa '88, dressed as an undertaker and talking about Ian Curtis; struck me as a bit cringeworthy at the time.)...But The Russell always had good music, good people..good everything.....it was just bloody good!!
