Artefact

Ticket
The Apollo
3rd February 1980

Another great venue and thankfully still going! I have seen many bands here over the years and The Clash a couple of times. The venue is at it's best when they remove the seats from downstairs. Bands I recall seeing there were Stiff Little Fingers, Adam and the Ants, New Order, The Who and Culture Club.

“Was a great concert went to this too, they had to remove downstairs seats as fans did it for them if they didnt move them, always remember handing broken seats over to staff as they were passed over the crowds into the front well.”
“Is this the gig with the Specials supporting them?”

“Not sure about the support but, just checked, and this date was 2 days after The Clash recorded Bank Robber at Pluto Recording Studios on Granby Row off Princess St - see artefact. A teenage Ian Brown tells us that he was hanging round the session.

I saw the Clash back at the Apollo on the Bankrobber tour in the August. Theatre of Hate were the support, their album was produced by Mick Jones.

You could often pay bouncers a couple of quid to get you into the Apollo but on that night I just turned up and there were still tickets left!!”

“The Specials were 3rd support to the Clash in July 78 "Clash on Parole tour" I think they had been given a suspended sentence for some minor indiscretion from memory. The main support was an American outfit called suicide who were a bit electronic I seem to remember and had a bit of a hit out at the time which proved to be there last I think. I was at the 78 gig but don't recall the 1980 especially although I feel sure I wouldn't have missed them. I experienced Alcoholic haze from the late 70's well into the 80's
Didn't U2 support the Clash at the Apollo or have I gone completely mad?”

“Just remembered they were in trouble because Paul Simonon had shot some pigeons with an air rifle or something, they used to have a song called guns on the roof about the incident (I think)”
