Artefact
The Cramps were the support for this gig and,as with most supports not many people wandered in to watch, and those who did mostly wandered out again when they started.Lux availed of the opportunity of a mostly empty auditorium to climb all over the seating and along the rows, half intimidating the good folk who'd remained to watch his show.More people up and left.It was showmanship at it's very best;at least that's how I remember it.The Police were good too.Only a few months earlier they played The Poly and I think "Roxanne" had just got in the charts so hence the bigger venue. On a slightly different tack I do recall one time, a couple of us charging through the backstage entrance and up the stairs into the hall, thinking we'd get lost in the crowd;a trick which served us well from time to time.Aaanyway we got into the hall and lo and behold it was empty;wrong night. With the bouncers hot on our heels we just turned round and were escorted from the building. The bouncers at The Free Trade were mostly kindly old men, unlike their counterparts at The Apollo who were complete bastards!I wouldn't mind but we thought Steve Hillage was on!I think it was a Sunday and we must have been bored...
