Javelin Records
1972

One of a number of 1970s record shop bags donated to the Archive by Ashley Kennerley. I love the designs and can't believe how many different shops there were around at that time.

If you're interested in the record shops of Manchester today, check out this fantastic website:

(I've guessed the year for this artefact.)

“The Bury branch was a meeting place for my group of friends in the late 70s! As with the Vibes record bag there was no Precinct in Bury until about 1972 - I think Javelin was one of the original shops there and was the place mum & dad bought their records, while we could be found at Vibes...
Great place to hang out, though! Lorraine (AKA Tilly) was the manager in my day.”

“As Shadow correctly points out, whilst Javelin had other premises in bury prior to this, The Mall wasn't built until at least 1972. This bag must have come from very shortly after that judging by the 'four-digit' phone number.”

“They also had a place at Prestwich in the 70's where I was almost a regular on Saturdays,a good selection of anything and one of the blokes behind the counter did some DJing at Phillips Park Hall around 1976 ish.”

“There was also a branch of Javelin in Wigan, they occupied part of the basement level of the arcade which was later redeveloped as The Galleries. I recall going down the escalator & seeing it on the left hand side. This would have been in 1976.”

“I think Javelin also had some sort of contract to supply Jukeboxes to various breweries (or at least the singles contained therein). I have a vague memory of seeing Javelin stickers on jukeboxes.”

“My sister worked at the Flacks Arcade branch in 1978, as her Saturday job. I remember her bringing home Real Life by Magazine in one of those bright orange Javelin bags - they were plastic by then, though. I'm 11 years younger than her and it all seemed impossibly glamourous! Javelin was a great record shop, I can still picture the counter, set at the back of the shop on a little platform. The record racks were all wooden. I loved going in to see her if my mum took me up town on a Saturday afternoon. I don't know if she was equally as joyful, though!”

“Thanks for the memories. I remember buying Secondhand Daylight off Preston Car Boot many years after it came out, of course. They were 'my;' band. None of my mates had a clue who they were. As you said: impossibly glamorous!”

“I worked in the Wigan branch for 2 years from 1974, then took over as Manager of the Bolton branch, and stayed there until around 1978,(I remeber Tilly well, once when I was on holiday, she was clocked whizzing down market street on a skateboard, by the area manager, Tom no less), moving on to the wholesale warehouse in Middleton, acting as stock co-ordinator and buyer for the shops plus the wholesale side. Made redundant around 1980 when the wholesale side was sold off to a firm called Wynd-Up records in Prestwich. Many a tale to tell, some good ones from the days in the shops, and some shady ones from the wholesale side, perhaps best kept under wraps.........”

“I worked at Javelin in Oldham 1978-81. It was a great time for music and a fun place to work at age 17. The staff were great Bev, Cathy, Carol and Vinny ( and me Paul of course)
The area manager Tom was a dream to work for. It was so sad when these stores started to close. If any one from Javelin sees this be good to hear from you at akabeton@shaw.ca .........Paul Taylor”

“Hey good memories I worked at the Bolton branch with Tilly ( Lorraine) we were caught with our newly purchased skate boards going down the precinct by our area manager in the late 70's. Swopped our discount with the Stolen from Ivor gang, obtained tickets for Bob Marley concert in Manchester from a customer God days young & carefree.”
