Artefact

Contract
New Order
2006

Certificate, signed by Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, confirming the allocation of Factory catalogue number FAC383 to the Vikings.

The document was prepared by us and presented to Wilson for signing after a DJ set in Glasgow, which by all accounts he did with characteristic aplomb and after no persuasion at all.

Tim is a big lad though.

To be honest, we'd decided to steal the number anyway, but to have Wilson's approval makes it even more special.

The selection of the number 383 was significant: from the very first single, all Joy Division and New Order releases were given catalogue numbers ending in 3 and 383 was the next one available.

The number has been used on various badges and chat-room aliases and the Vikings continue to gather for New Order-related and unrelated events around the country and the world.

“This will always remind me of a very special moment in my life, for it was I who secured the signature. I was the fake Ian Curtis in the JD tribute band Digital, and we were invited to play The Arches in Glasgow as support to a Tony Wilson DJ set. I travelled ready prepared with the certificate printed off, hoping for a signature but not really expecting to get one. After we'd finished packing up the gear (no such luxury as roadies!) we ventured into the dressing room to find AHW in particularly convivial mood. Not only did he praise us for "being much less trouble than the originals" he proceeded to tell us various anecdotes about the recording of Closer, signed one of our setlists and also signed the certificate. He was well aware of the Vikings and pleased to be given a Viking badge. Our next gig was a Cancer Research benefit gig I promoted in London, in which we had a guest appearance from one P.Hook. Fantastic times.”
