Southern Sporting Club

Hi . all you guys talking about the Mayfair Club ?
is that what it was called ? dont remember it as that but I was proberly grown up by then , I saw my first X-rated film at the Corona , as it was called then, Blackboard Jungle it was called with Sidney Potier a few years later I started work as a waiter there ,by then it was called the Southern Sporting Club, on the eve of my 22nd birthday the 13th June 1963 the Beatles played there , They were not the best group there , I think Wee Willy Harris proberly brought more customers in , other stars like Johnny Ray , Guy Mitchel Alma Cogan , Tommy Bruce , Heinz, and Screaming Lord Dave Such were top acts there were other specials too like Nat Gonelle, Jimmy James and the Vagabonds Eric Delanly and many many more Then the bubble burst in Clubland as we knew it and I believe it became Stone Ground and that was not our scene (one mans meat is another mans poison)So as you do we grew up and became respecable

“Wow,that building held so many ghosts and now stands a cheap hotel in it's place.When it was The Stoneground the DJ Nick Brady used to drive around my brother and his mates in the back of his small van and they used to put the poster's up around the area.They were quite large and colourful,he always brought one home and soon you couldn't see his bedroom walls.Queen,Led Zep,Alex Harvey,Rory Gallagher,all the big names played there.That would of been 1972/73.”

“The mayflower or the corona or the sporting club has a huge history of music - found a great bit about its rise as a MCR beat club venue in the sixties and gerry dorsey, aka Englbert Humperdink ?? and other rising stars played there - It became a rock club in the early seventies (see other posts)

I went back last weekend and thought I was stood outside but the cheap hotel although close to where it once stood is actually where the houses were. (see exact detail of location from later post by bodzy)- weird seeing it now - the street has still got the pub and the cafe round the corner which served chips to the crew and staff”

“Permafrost, dont laugh at this but the most merorable thing , the one thing that stuck in my mind was the sweat that came off the man , he was dripping , the thin light blue mohair suit that he wore was ringing wet through from the armpits to the trousers, every night he played , I also saw him at the Napoleaon on Cornwall St Gorton M/c, when I worked there in 1989, The man ...the music ,...absolutely a star”

“Boy in exile, please dont take this wrong ,and i am not being picky but you looking at the wron block of land ,the Hotel is where houses used to stand not the Southern, lets say if you stood with your back to the front door of the Imperial Pub on Birch , directly opposite would be the southern , now the land is the carwash of the garage that is set back off Hyde Rd , Oh just for the record that Pub , I used to go in with Myra Hindley the infamous Moors Murderess and a few of my other mates and today The cafe "Brenda's" is still there

“bodzy- thanks for that and for the accuracy- "perhaps english heritage should put up a blue sign - the club has had at least three different incarnations and hosted four or more generations of punters and even has its own web site about its days as a rock club in the 70s- see other posts from members- Ta”
