Tower Club
18th February 1983

English dogs had a huge following and just had indie chart success with thier new EP - The tower club Oldham was a rambling old place we used to have a private hire taxi driver who would squash six or seven of us in his toyota and get us back to manchester town center after the gigs, for just £5 where we then got the night bus home.

“The very last band to play The Tower Club were a local band called The Exit . . . cant quite remember the date but i know it was a Saturday. The Club 'caught' fire in the early hours of the following Sunday morning and never re-opened. The owner then opened a Fish n Chip shop on Ashton Road! They also played support at the venue to UK Subs, Here and Now, English Dogs, amongst others.”

“Hey woodsman - yes - The Exit was indeed the infamous three piece fronted by the one and only Malik! I remember him saying that the point of that band was to see if they could barred from everywhere they played - they hardly ever finished a full set before being 'paid' off! Happy Days!
Seen him recently playing in a killer (and very successful) bluesy three piece called The Charlie White Project - also heard he is equally as successful playing acoustic/solo stuff.”

“hey woodsman . . .

yeah - our mutual friend is still as 'loud' as ever!
Maliks set is more bluesy/rock sounding these days - no punky stuff and pretty much all originals - well worth checking out.”

“My old punk band Nervous Breakdown were due to play here with The Frantic Elevators. Myself and the bass player and singer went up there with the frantics in their mates VW van, but our drummer who was supposed to be meeting up with us there never turned up. so The frantic Elevators had to do it alone. I'm glad they did. half the Oldham Rugby team usurped the stage half way through their set and got a grip of mick and forced him to sing yellow Submarine with them. Poor lad was visibly shaking”
