This was the second appearance in Manchester (since the 60s, anyway) of Motown's Funk Brothers - sadly, only two of the originals were left by this short visit and even more sadly Joe Hunter died a few weeks later.
There was an After Show party and Joe and Jack Ashford kindly mingled with us mortals, signing autographs and chatting.
In all honesty, the quality of the music this time round was nowhere near as good as the night they played the Apollo a couple of years earlier, mostly because we didn't have a full team of genuine Motown session players, but I'm sure the acoustics were wrong on the night.

“i think a lot of gigs (non-classical) at the bridgewater suffer from the acoustics, and also the rather formal space... having seen some amazing concerts by bonnie 'prince' billy in various other venues, the one at the bridgewater was awful... although i have seen some great gigs here, i'm not sure why some work better than others (the 'zero degrees of separation' (Juana Molina was incredible) and the 'Buena Vista Social Club' concerts being particular highlights).”

“... oh and i really don't know why i didn't go to the Funk Bros Apollo gig! i loved 'standing in the shadows of motown', and not going to the apollo show is still a major regret. i believe it was one of the best concerts evr witnessed in manchester!”
