Ticket
Manchester Polytechnic Cavendish House
20th June 1981

This is odd- maybe I have very localised amnesia, but I have no recollection of seeing Killing Joke at the old Manchester Polytechnic Student Union, but at Rotters!
Anyone around who can recall a late venue change, or something?
Nevertheless, this ticket has been lying around since 1981 and it says Cavendish House - on the back is a stamp for Discount Records where I obviously bought it.

“Went to the under 18 UK Subs at the Cavendish in 1980/81 and Charlies still going nearly 30 years on.Was this the venue with Dennis the Menace painted on the wall or have i got my wires crossed?”

“yes! Dennis The Menace stared down at many a top band; it was a cracking venue; and the Killing Joke gig was superb; very, very intense; recently scoured U-Tube for early KJ tracks and found some good stuff. It was a hot early evening (we arrived after a band rehearsal at which 2 had tickets and a 3rd member came along and was able to pay on the door despite the long queue).

5ea5ider; I have a mad memory of the support being other than Crispy Ambulance but can't recall who. I'll be happy if your version is confirmed”

“Thanks for clearing that up, i was sure it had Dennis on the wall but your mind plays tricks the older you get. I do remember it being a lively gig for a matinee with the dj playing some good tunes prior to the band playing. It was the first time i heard Legion by Theatre of Hate-fantastic”

“Hi dj and mitch and all,
I have a photo showing Norman, Drummer with Armed Force, who were supporting the Angelic Upstarts at the Cavendish House in 1979. This was close to All Saints Park on Oxford Road which was across the road from 'Johnny Roadhouse' RIP.

In the background of the photo is the painting of Dennis the Menace and Gnasher. I will be shortly downloading this on the Armed Force and Venue archives.”

“Nice one chips, i very rarely took any photos of gigs/venues back in the day, apart from a few nights at the Banshee/Ritz. Unlike today where everyone seems to be recording or photographing everything, brandishing an instamatic camera usually resulted with a smack round the head!”
