Greg Wilson
Legend, Wigan Pier, The Hacienda, Legends (Whitworth Street)
2025

In this interview, legendary DJ Greg Wilson takes us deep into early ’80s Manchester, when Electro Funk was just emerging and Legend was at the heart of it all.

Greg talks about building up Wednesday nights at Legend into one of the biggest club nights in the UK, introducing Electro to British dancefloors when it was still seen as controversial—even soulless—by some in the Black music scene.

He describes the club’s futuristic sound system, iconic lighting, and how it created a space like no other. One of the original mirrorballs even ended up with A Guy Called Gerald.

Greg reflects on how the scene at Legend, the Playpen, and the Gallery paved the way for the Hacienda and the explosion of UK dance culture. From Broken Glass’s first breakdance battles to the rise of Planet Rock, this was a moment where Funk, Soul, Jazz Funk, and Disco collided with the electronic future—Techno, House, Hip Hop.

It’s a fascinating, raw, and emotional look at a time that changed everything.
