An interview for NME with me, Jerry Bullivant and Ian Runacres. At a Christmas party in December 1986, on a farm in Cheshire, Jerry Bullivant proposed the idea of a cassette only label to release ‘World Music’ that was being produced in and around Manchester. He asked me and Ian Runacres if we would be interested in getting involved. Jerry was a friend of the Diagram Brothers and Dislocation Dance and, 3 years earlier, had accompanied me and Lawrence Diagram to London to watch us record a John Peel session. Ian was the former guitarist and singer with Dislocation Dance and his primary role, at this point, was to record and produce the artists that we were to find. I was a photographer/musician, though my role, initially, was to be product and graphic designer. I had no training in either area but I was a very enthusiastic amateur! Jerry had the name ‘Bop Cassettes’ so my first job was to come up with a logo and strapline. The logo was based on musical notes and the strapline ‘Made In Manchester ‘ was to emphasise the ‘manufacturing’ process of the music and cassettes and connect this firmly to the city, as well as being a nod to Manchester’s industrial heritage.
