Artefact

Photograph
Mayflower Club
1972

I was looking at the Mayflower Club artefacts and comments with interest, so I did a Google search and found the above photo of the club which was taken in the early 1970s when it was called the Southern Sporting Club on the link below.

I only went to the Mayflower twice, once to see Ultravox (with Midge Ure) August 1980 and then Crass in October of the same year. I remember the Crass gig quite vividly, especially Annie Anxiety getting gobbed in the mouth and slamming down her mic and storming off stage in shock/disgust and after only one song ('Nagasaki Nightmare' I think it was?) of Crass being on stage, all hell broke loose and someone got bottled near the front of the stage. My sister and I and a couple of my mates didn't hang around much longer after that, the police had just entered the building on our way out.

“looks like this photo's taken at the same time as one of those on the www.images.manchester.gov.uk site, as the MG BGT's parked out the front, along with a Mk1 Cortina parked down the side of the venue which you can just see above the roof of the passing Vauxhall(?) - Motoring Ed”
