Griff thanks Ida for the list of books she sent him. He has "decided against joining Boots' library; there are many fascinitating possibilities about your list and that, with the travelling library, will keep me as busy as I want to be in the reading line." Later, he will join Boots' subscription library and be very impressed.
He recommends A.G. Macdonell's England Their England "especially at this time when we are thinking rather a lot about what England really means to us."
He thinks of refurbishing his pipe and explains that each pipe brings out something different from the same tobacco.
He says "I am never happier than when you are within talking, seeing and writing distance, for preference the first two."
He's been to the football and met Connie who shouted at Eric Brook to "go on!" which he didn't. "If you wish to see Man at his worst, you ought to visit Maine Road some time when City are playing a strong team. There is nothing like a home defeat to try the temper and I am sure I ate at least half a slice of bread less at tea last Saturday."
He offers some suggestions to meet up for a date.
