I'm not sure what the "rural atmosphere" Griff is referring to in this letter for Ida but sure why not.
He admits that he likes opera as "a highly placed radio hobby" but that it's instrumental music that is best seen in the halls.
He was alone at work at the travel agency "so thought I would try dialling Ardwick 1844," the number of the Matthay School of Music where Ida is secretary. However, "this highly diverting pursuit must now stop, at lease until Miss H[ilda] C[ollens] is known to be away." HC is the school principal.
He's "just been entertained (?) by three songs written by one Alan Rawsthorne, an ex-pupil of your rivals at the College," on BBC's Contemporary Music concert.
