Griff regrets leaving Ida to catch the bus as he ended up walking home instead. "If one disobeys in the matter of catching buses, one might as well do it on a large scale and not rush away to walk all the way home."
He writes late at night as he likes to give half an ear to the speeches on the radio but promises her his undivided attention. He mentions Italy joining the war and hopes that the Vatican City is not bombed "for they at any rate seemed to be for peace."
He relays how he ended up in Middleton by getting on the wrong train being so distracted by a novel he was reading. The first time he did that, he got on the wrong train after hearing Norman Allin sing at Belle Vue.
