“This was later covered and video directed as detailed below (from myvillage website.) I caught Kealer at N&D and thought it was a great gig - some great lost tracks on the album.
Kealer
Release new single 'Cry' - 9th August
When Godley & Crème released Cry in 1985 they took the music world by storm: it was a worldwide hit single but also took music video to new heights, with its ground breaking technology showing peoples faces morphing into one another. Almost twenty years later Kealer's new version of this classic song is starting to gather similar momentum . . .
Kealer is singer / songwriter Jason Kelly - an individual with an unusual amount of talent. The new single, 'Cry' is a sublime arrangement of piano and strings with Jason's vocals - a mesmerising combination of power and fragility - building in layers as the verse runs into the chorus.
When Kevin Godley was handled a copy of Kealers 'Cry', he was so taken with it he contacted Jason Kelly direct and insisted he produce the video! This has since become reality.
Kealer has so far released one album, the autobiographical 'My Own Worst Enemy', to considerable critical acclaim. The songs reveal much about Jason Kelly's rock & roll adventure lifestyle: a Manc-born rebel who seemed hell bent on seeing how low he could go into drugs, alcohol and trouble before bobbing back to the surface. Thrown out of his parents house at 18 after (among other things) being discovered working as a male stripper, Kelly moved to London where things would get much worse before they got better. This period of his life Jason has described as 'colourful' - an understatement of ever there was one.
In 1999, fortunes changed - temporarily - when Kelly formed Stroke and signed one of the biggest record deals of the year. The resulting hype and rags-to-riches lifestyle would lead to the bands self destruction and, eventually, the emergence of a truer, brighter song writing talent: Jason Kelly as Kealer. Cry is the first single to be released from Kealers second album, which is currently being recorded and due for release on Jive Records at the end of the year. www.kealer.co.uk”
“I remember going to a job interview with Media Lab the company that Godley & Creme had set up in Chelsea Harbour but I was too stupid to take the offer up. I thought that the flats were too dear to rent and the salary too low. The follys of youth”
