Broadoak Hotel (Ashton-under-Lyne)

The tradition of Whit Walks and brass band contests during Whit Week, when factories and schools closed for annual holidays in the Pennines, still takes place annually on the Friday following Whit Sunday. Many villages would hold their own contests and these spread to neighbouring areas and now take place in many locations in Tameside and Oldham. Bands travel round and take part in as many contests in the area as they can.

One of the two contests held at Ashton is at Broadoak. The Hotel is now a Rugby ground
