Autograph
The Apollo
1980

Autographed album from my youthful days mis-spent hanging around the back of the Apollo.

The Skids were the first punky band that I really got into - my first gig in 78/79. I still think they're an interesting band - taking post punk in lyrical and musical new directions - not always successfully.

A Manchester connection? Influential guitarist Stuart Adamson (ask The Edge) was born in Stretford. Not to mention the B-Side of Into The Valley - TV Stars, with its stoopid chorus of "Albert Tatlock!" (ask your grandad).

The album was in one of those old orange Virgin Records bags with the big V that said "It's at Virgin". Adamson grabbed it, signed it and amended it to read "Stuart Adamson is a Virgin" - something else I can't seem to find.

“a very vague mcr connection is that richard jobson's brother - michael - is currently Doves' tour manager (and has been for the last 5 or so years). Tenuous? oh well...”
“Stuart Adamson (later of Big Country) died in Hawaii in 2001.”
“He did, sadly. Met him a couple of times - nice guy. RIP. The Skids have/are reforming for a one-off gig in T In The Park this summer. I forget who's doing his guitar parts? U2/Green Day recently covered Skids track The Saints Are Coming for the New Orleans appeal.”
“Nice to see this here Tony. I met the Skids a few times Richard Jobson & Stuart Adamson were always really nice. Never knew there was a Manchester connection though. Last time I met them was at the Apollo. After the gig Richard waited with me until my Friend's dad came to pick us up really nice of him to do that. Have to say that the U2/Green Day didn't have the energy of the original pretty pointless cover really. I have a Skids 7 inch vinyl in a gatefold sleeve will have to root that out too along with some gig flyers and ticket stubs now that there is the appropriate connection”
