Artefact

Autograph
The Apollo
1979

Autographed copy of The Stranglers 1979 album The Raven. The front cover is the limited edition 3D sleeve - one of those scratchy plastic hologram jobs - high tech for 1979!

One of several autographs gained from many happy hours hanging about by the stage door of the Apollo when I was 13/14/15. I never did suss that the bands never arrived until 4 or 5pm and instead hung around all afternoon.

There was some promo guy handing out empty sleeves of the Don't Bring Harry ( ie heroin) single outside. He gave us a stack of them and I had them artfully arranged on my bedroom wall for a few years. I managed to get one signed by all 4 band members - JJ Burnel, the surliest of the bunch, didnt sign this album or indeed much for anyone.

Wherever that sleeve is kept it's with all my Apollo tickets from this time which I'm struggling to find - Clash, Siouxsie, Damned, Ramones, Jam, Stranglers, Skids, SLF, Elvis Costello, etc etc.

“tony that's ace! the raven is one of my favourite lps ever... (and the stranglers one of my favourite bands).”
“Yeah, The Stranglers often get written out of history. Ask Clint Boon about those keys! I saw them 3 or 4 times and (its all coming back to me now) wore a Hugh Cornwell style leather shoe lace knotted round my neck for years. I nearly got thrown out of the Apollo once as there were seats ripped up and I was nearby - talked my way back in from the foyer.”
“i know the starnglers have that whole mysogenistic thing thrown at them, and there are many who don't think they were 'real'. Tony Wilson called them 'fakers' and that they 'fooled us'. I still love them, and i think The Raven, Rattus Norvegicus and Black and White are British classic Lps. We interviewed Hugh Cornwell but he couldn't remember a thing about playing in Mcr so it was a bit pointless!”
“I saw the Stranglers at the Apollo when The Raven was released. I had a black jumper with one white sleeve a la Hugh C.It was my second gig after seeing Devo a few months earlier.”
