Dorothy Ardern remembers composing for the Bolton Youth Orchestra.
Dorothy: When they had the 25th anniversary concert, they had a concert to celebrate their silver anniversary, if you like, Mr Milner, he died very shortly after that I think. He was a very nice man. He rang me up and said ‘would you like to come to the 25th anniversary concert, because we’re playing your piece?’ I composed an overture for the orchestra, I wrote, and it took me all my summer holidays, because I had to write parts for all this lot out by hand, so you can imagine how long it took. And I got in a bit of a mess with the French horn part, because I’d put it in the wrong key!
