Dorothy Ardern talks about the performances she took part in with the Northern School of Music, and supporting Louis Kentner when he gave a master class at the Northern School of Music.
Dorothy: Well I played in Houldsworth Hall, yes. That would be in 1950 or thereabouts, when I played in the Houldsworth Hall. They used to have a Tuesday midday concert every week in the Houldsworth Hall and budding concert pianists would play in there. It gave them a break into the professional scene. Oh! The other thing I must mention is that I was asked to do a masterclass with Louis Kentner, who was a top concert pianist in the 50s. And he came to the Northern, in the summer school and I went in, Miss Collens asked me ‘you play Brahms well and Louis Kentner wants to give a lesson on Brahms, so I’ve selected you to play for him’. That was a great honour. So I thoroughly enjoyed that.
