Geoffrey Griffiths tells of a rainy and miserable journey home, he was even thankful for the No.19 bus "for once in a way!" even though it takes him away from his sweetheart Ida Carroll.
He's made a bit of a blunder. He'd placed her letters from his breast pocket "close to my heart" into a large envelope and to a safe place - along with the other papers in that pocket, namely his identification card and certificate of registration. "It is fortunate that the policemen of Tuesday morning's tea making did not ask to see the identity card; with that and they doubtful glances and the blackout offence...!" In WW2 it was compulsory to carry your ID card - in case you were a spy!
With work keeping them apart, he decides that "I am sure we out to be together for a long time where there are no such clients and no schools of music and no students - just you and me!"
He follows this with a declaration of passionate love, at the expense of all others, "I only know that before I've never been truly in love, not even made love that affects heart and senses, as though the desire has been there but not the true incentive - not you darling, to transport me, for I do love you, with everything I have, for always."
