Sad Cafe
6th June 1982
After playing a summer ball at Exeter College, Oxford, gerry Fyfe, the band's manager, invited us to go to Holland to see sad Cafe play this festival. Only thing was he couldn't remember where exactly it was being held! He siad it was somewhere near the German border, so armed with that information four of us set off in a mini to Dover and across to the Hoek van Holland. was it brave or foolhardy to go a country we didn't know, with not much of an idea of where we were going and nowhere to stay? Teenagers don't see the problems and that may be why we didn't have any! We headed for Germany and when we saw a poster for the festival in Hengevelde we knew we were at the right place. We stopped at the first place we saw that looked like a B & B and booked two rooms. the following day we sat outside the venue and waited in the warm sunshine for the band to arrive...we didn't have tickets! The crew arrived mid-morning and after a few more hours of waiting we went to the guys on the gate and asked if we could speak to Roger Proctor, the sound engineer. He told us to say we were 'mit Sad Cafe' and that's what we did....got in with no problem and could probably have been inside the ground all day.
