The White Lion
1988

An offshoot from the last days of The Men of 992, this gig in Withington was notable for the audience having a great time and the landlord saying that we were "Too F..king loud!". We didn't get re-booked. He's long gone. We're still going. Hmm.....
Guitarist, the unique Peter Gallagher, Nick Berry on Drums and Arnie Furniss on bass. Arnie also known as Sinuf Mood in 'Iron Lung' (long gone) and Sinful Dr. Arson in Beat Science to this very day!

“great decor!”
“Aye, indeed, it was the cellar bar's inimitable colour - Sweaty Puce Nicotine, unchanged since the days we used to go to the rock discos there in the early 70s! Ask Sbilts about that, methinks there's a wacky group photo of that era with a couple of dozen reprobates (ahem.) in front of said boozer.”
“over to you sbilts...”
“Found it Mat, click on 'show all venues' and find The White Lion.”
“The White Lion.....the reason my nose bends to one side to this day.....”
“I love this story which I think I heard CP Lee tell on a film tour from the Cornerhouse in the 1980s. John Byrom ( see www.chethams.org.uk/byrom.htm) was a regular in the red, white and golden lion pubs in Withington/Didsbury. Needless to say he died of the demon drink. He's buried in Southern Cemetery where his gravestone says "Killed by Lions". Excellent!”
“I was nearly killed by a platform sole shoe in the face, they could have put "god rest his sole" on mine. I survived but lead a chastened life with a nose in 3 pieces as a reminder.”
