Official Magazine of the Northern School of Music, covering the academic year 1954-55
This particular edition is forced to take a slightly sombre tone given the recent deaths of school founder and principal Hilda Collens and her colleague Dr Walter Carroll. Although colleagues and students are no doubt saddened by these events, the focus on their obituaries shed light on their accomplishments and dedication to the school. Reading the final paragraph of the editorial, there is no doubt that the efforts of these individuals were inspiring to the students who recognised them.
Pages 22-27 have been censored to protect personal data.
Other notable excerpts from this magazine provide an insight into graduate lives of the NSM, such as Hubert Harry’s exploits in Switzerland (pg. 12), Vincent Billington’s completion of National Service and return to Manchester to play in numerous recitals, as well as alumni’s involvement in the BBC Orchestra and stints abroad. There is no question that the school equipped students with the skills needed to develop a successful career within their chosen subject.
