Artefact
A large size free poster from the NME. Moz caricature by Carl Flint.
I can only imagine that the use of the confederate flag as the backdrop pins this to the Finsbury Park Union Jack waving episode ('92- pre Brit Pop) and the subsequent debate and allegations of "racism".
I could be wrong on the date however. Morrissey's exploration of Englishness and working-class masculinity led to similar debates on several occasions - Panic, National Front Disco, Bengali In Platforms, Asian Rut, "reggae is vile" etc. Meanwhile, one of The Smiths last gigs was an Anti-Apartheid benefit in London.
The poster also features Moz-icons such as Elvis, James Dean, Elsie Tanner, Sandie Shaw etc and 50's rockabilly images in the red background. The reverse is a more sympathetic Kevin Cummins photo.
