Master Tape
808 State, A Guy Called Gerald, MC Tunes
11th December 1987

Master tape from Spirit Studios ,Used for the EP "Hit Squad MCR" which featured 3 "Hip Hop Acts" later to turn into bits of 808 state.
MC Tunes needs no introduction and SBM (Scratch Beat Masters) was infact just Gerald Simpson (A Guy Called Gerald).
There was an earlier recording of this track recorded at The Kitchen ( A Studio In Hulme in Charles Barry Crescent)
The cassette cover shows MC Tunes at a Rap Contest brandishing an ornamental Samurri Sword ,for which he was disqualified,(sounds like its out 8Miles ) any one know about these early Rap Contests at Rafters/Music Box?
CFI stands for "Cash Fat Interface" an early name we were flirting with.

“was the kitchen studio the same place as the kitchen club?”
“yes it twas..they tried to drill one of the walls through to expand it but it was reinforced concrete ,so it was only big enough to squeeze through.
808 once took theyre New York hardend An R man,(Tom Richardson from Tommy Boy) there on a night out ,he
described it as being like Haydes, .It was all ultraviolet teeth n eyes..”
“Wasn't Dave Caine also in the Scratchbeat Masters?”
“you could be right! though he tended to hang with the spin masters more ..not shure what his role was (rapper?) there would be no room for a second rapper with MC Tunes around.
There was little Dave who was a DJ ,and Fresh Vanese who
was a rapper.”
