The landlord of the Crown and Cushion in Bolton told me he’d booked Tge Charlatans to play two gigs, £50 a time. After the first one, they scored an indie hit single and he had a sellout on his hands. Still quite a thing to have seen them upstairs in a pub.

“Was there, had my driving test the following day! Nigel Taggart who was a pal from college has just started as a photographer at the Bolton Evening News and took a number of photos which I have copies of somewhere. We then interviewed Tim afterwards for a little piece in the newspaper. I’ll always remember Tim wishing me luck for the driving test the next day, and I passed, cheers Tim!”
