In March 1971, The Rolling Stones played two shows at the Free Trade Hall as part of their ‘Goodbye Britain’ tour to promote the soon to be released ‘Sticky Fingers’ album. They had not played UK since autumn 1966 but in 1971, were going out after having announced that they were becoming tax exiles in the South of France.
They played the following cities:
Newcastle upon Tyne (March 4th – 2 shows) ; Manchester (March 5th – 2 shows); Coventry (March 6th – 2 shows); Glasgow (March 8th – 2 shows); Bristol (March 9th – 2 shows); Brighton (March 10th – 2 shows); Liverpool (March 12th – 2 shows); Leeds (March 13th – 1 show) and London (March 14th – 2 shows and 26th – 1 show). The Leeds show was recorded, broadcast live on Radio 1 and eventually released on CD as part of the extended ‘Sticky Fingers’ release in 2015.
The band playing Manchester was: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards (guitar and harmonica); Mick Taylor (guitars); Bill Wyman (bass guitar); Charlie Watts (drums); Bobby Keys (saxophone); Nicky Hopkins (piano); Jim Price (trumpet).
