Master Tape
New Order
27th January 1987

Another tape from the Rob Gretton Archive.

This one is for their first night in Tokyo at an unknown venue (anyone care to enlighten me?) on 27/01/1987.

There has been some recent discussion about what was played here and I was hoping to clarify this once and for all. Unfortunately the tape adds little to what's already known and is possibly incomplete.

After 'Shellshock' the audience tape is followed by 'Everything's Gone Green', on here Side A ends with 'Shellshock' but continues with 'Bizarre Love Triangle' on the flipside and 'Everything's Gone Green' is nowhere on the tape.

There's also no sign of the rumoured encore of 'Sister Ray'.

What we've got here:

01. Paradise
02. Sub Culture
03. Way Of Life
04. Sunrise
05. Your Silent Face
06. This Time Of Night
07. Shellshock
?
08. Bizarre Love Triangle
09. Face Up
10. Temptation
11. Blue Monday

“Well the venue was listed as Koseinenkin Kaikan again when I first got the audience tape in Feb 87, and my tape copy only had the first 7 songs. I'm not convinced that EGG was from this show at all, even less so now we have details of the soundboard recording.

I'm alos pretty sure that the mysterious Sister Ray was a second encore from one of the 1985 shows rather than 1987 - there's an anecdote about it somewhere in one of the books that says the security had left the stage area and venue exits when the band finished the set and did one encore, so when they came back on for a second encore there was a stampede of thousands of excited Japanese kids able to get to the front of the stage unimpeded!”
“I agree with TJ regarding EGG and Sister Ray...the former doesn't have the same soundstage as the other tracks, hopefully at some point we'll be able to identify it. That SR doesn't appear here is additional, though not conclusive, evidence that it wasn't played that night, as there's no guarantee that the soundboard recording is complete. And of course the gigography at new-order.net/no/gigs has been updated accordingly.”
