86, Palatine Road, West Didsbury, Manchester, once the headquarters of Factory Records.
Factory was a Manchester based independent record label started in January 1978 by Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus, featuring such bands as Joy Division, Durutti Column, New Order and the Happy Mondays. A first floor flat (number 4) in this building was Erasmus’ home, and the room with the bay window on the left became the Factory office. It’s interesting to consider just who came and went through these doors; what discussions and arguments were had and what far reaching plans and schemes were hatched within that unassuming room. In September 1990, Factory moved to a larger, grander Ben Kelly designed building in the city centre on Charles Street. From little acorns…..
