The Willows

Well before my time this. It was around these years that The Willows social — in Weaste, Salford — was voted the best in club land. The club was largely financed by brewers Greenall Whitley and Brian Snape, chairman of Salford Rugby League Football Club.

The featured advert is in an October 1972 issue of 'Salford Scene'; the match day programe for Salford RLFC (now known as Salford City Reds).

There's a number of notable acts on the bill. The most instantly recognisable bands are scouse acts The Swinging Blue Jeans and Billy J. Kramer. And of course, there's Bob Monkhouse!

Salford singer cum comedian Dave Baron is the musical link to the Manchester district.

Other notable acts here are:

The Caravelles — female duo who had a trans–atlantic smash with “You Don't Have To Be A Baby To Cry” in 1963. The single reached #6 in the UK on Decca records and #3 in the The Billboard Hot 100 on the Smash imprint.

Clive Lee — singer with the Rockin' Berries until around 1967. The brummie band had a number of hits in the 60's on a number of British record labels including Decca, Piccadilly and Pye.

Ken Goodwin — Comedian who made his name on The Comedians (T.V show)
