Demo Tape
New Order
1985

A tape from the Rob Gretton Archive labelled 'Shame Of The Nation - Japanese Mixes'.

This features 4 demos of 'State Of The Nation' (the first two with vocals, the 2nd two are instrumental) and reinforces the rumour that they originally recorded this track in Japan.

The year is an educated guess as the track was first played live in '85 and they toured Japan mid '85.

“Excellent stuff, we know that they arrived in Hong Kong around 25th April 1985 and did one date there before playing three or maybe four in Japan (the PFD video gig being one of two in Tokyo, there was also an Osaka show that we have a recording of), but there was nothing in Australia until Perth on May 15th, so they had 10 or 11 days to record these tracks and take in the Japanese tourist experience. They didn't play the song live (probably, without access to all the tapes) until the Hacienda on 16th July 85 though.”
