A front page piece from the Manchester Independent newspaper, 1963, written and edited by University of Manchester students.

At this time the Men's and Women's Student Unions were segregated. It wasn't until 1967 they combined to form the University of Manchester Students’ Union. This followed on from Anna Ford's election as the first joint President of the Students’ Unions in 1965. It was one of the last unions to be unified in the country. Anna Ford became a well-known journalist and broadcaster for Granada Television, ITN, and the BBC, retiring in 2006.

1963 was the year the Students' Union first started hosting and promoting concerts, with jazz bandleader Humphrey Lyttelton kicking things off.

I have found a number of references to Lyttelton playing in Manchester around this time, (including a concert at Manchester Sports Guild Sports & Social Centre, Long Millgate, on 16 Nov 1963), but none for the Union gig.
