The Waltones
1987

The Waltones pictured, looking quiff-tastic, outside Walton’s off licence in Chorlton (?), from which they took their name. The image is the back cover of their first single “Downhill” on Medium Cool, 1987.

Guitarist Mark Collins, of course, found considerable success with The Charlatans.

Check em out - great band of this period.

“Medium Cool was a London based label, run by a Mancunian - Andy Wake. Andy went to Altrincham Grammar school with John Squire and Ian Brown, (in the days before Ian had a Salford accent.) Andy is in the process of writing a blog telling the story of the label.
Walton's store was around the Withington Rd/Mauldeth Rd area, I think. I'm not sure if it was actually in Chorlton or just over the border into Whalley Range.”
