Invisible Girls, John Cooper Clarke
1980

Hard to do justice to this design classic in a photo but this is Johnny Clarke’s excellent 1980 album Snap, Crackle and Bop – musical backing provided by The Invisible Girls. Peeping from the genuine pocket is a 10x7x50 page lyric and photo booklet. When removed, not only is there a pair of trademark shades in the pocket but a strip of chewing gum if you peer deep enough inside.

Don’t you miss the design opportunities afforded by the 12” format?

Sleeve designed by Peter Saville and Paul Welch. Sleeve photos by Bob Elsdale. Photos in the book by Kevin Cummins, Tom Sheehan, Paul Slattery.

Not quite clear who did what by way of music/production but credited are: Vinnie Riley (as spelt), Martin Hannet (as spelt), Steve Hopkins, Lynn Oakey, Pete Shelley, Trevor Spencer, Paul Burgess, Karl Burns, Dave Hassell, Stephanie Formula.

A great assembly of Manchester talent. 10 tracks – everyone a classic.
