The NME advert from November 83 featuring an appearance from The Smiths.

This particular gig was the homecoming gig to end all. The venue was packed and hundreds left outside. The band did TOTP that very evening with This Charming Man and got the train up to play the gig (on stage after midnight).

The first we saw of them was on the screens either side of the stage as they were leaving the dressing rooms downstairs and coming up the stairs towards the stage.

Hysteria followed!

The support was James playing what seems to be their 4th ever gig.

“Metal percussion was big in 83 - I'll write up the legendary (in our house) Einsturzende Neubaten gig from the April sometime - mentioned elsewhere on this site briefly.

SPK were a mult-racial outfit whose name stood for something different with each record release (like Spizz.) These included, Seppukku, Surgical Penis Klinik and Socialistisches Patienten Kollectiv - fact fans!

I caught them at the Poly a few months later and the singer swung a 10ft length of heavy chain over the audiences heads with strobe lights flashing. I'm a lanky git - nearly had my head off! Exciting though.

Depeche Mode then appropriated the Neubauten/SPK/Test Dept vibe and the rest is history.

“I was there and yes it was mental. The band had to get back from London where they were doing TOTP and didn't arrive on stage until really late. When they did the place erupted...the atmosphere was unreal. James were amazing too... I'd previously seen them play at Devilles”
