Wall of Surf video, released by Ikon video. I love the Ikon boxes- see the picture, on the inside is Ikon and Manchester, England moulded in the plastic.
“In the early-mid 80's many/all of the gigs I attended at the hacienda were being filmed. Does anyone know what happened to all that priceless footage. I always assumed it was held by Ikon.
I was one of about 20 people at the first Einsturzende Neubauten gig there (Blixa Bargeld) which was my favourite gig EVER by a million miles for sheer visceral excitement. I'll write it up at some point. I'd love to see that footage. Fire, blood, sparks, broken glass, drunken men lurching around with angle grinders, pneumatic drill left hanging out of the venue wall, drumming with giant spanners on metal pipes and shouting in German - I get excited every time I remember it.
There's not many shows where, mid-gig, the audience ends up at the back of the venue with the band aiming a full crate of milk bottles at them, one by one!”
“Indeed it was John Bentham....who lives in St Annes who filmed most of the Hac gigs...he is Outlaw 23.....was also called Visionary.......I know John as he & I both freelance for Cherry Red Records as video consultants.Cherry Red have a stake in Johns archive...which is huge...everything from Divine to The Smiths early Hac gigs......not much can be cleared for release these days...they have tried.”
