In British clubs and raves, European-influenced techno had already got harder and faster, becoming known as "hardcore", but towards the end of 1991 I turned on Sunset Radio and suddenly everything was frantically fast and noisy. This was "Jungle Techno", it soon lost the "Techno" from it's name. The Cousin Matty show was presented erm, uniquely in a (fake) american accent, and most bizzarely, instead of being hidden in the night-time slots usually given to specialist music, suddenly blared out in the "drivetime" slot around 6pm. There's a good description of the show by the uploader on youtube.
The presentation and selection are a bit "extreme for extreme's sake" , there was no mixing and I always suspected he played everything on +8 -but this added to the impact of what was undoubtedly a paradigm shift in British dance music, and the exhilaration of discovering a new style. The show was where i heard most of my first Jungle records, especially the unique and wonderful early Ibiza Recordings /Limited E releases. Oh and it was great for annoying my best mate/flatmate who'd recently gone all Balearic.
