The MDMArchive was invited to help organise Rob Gretton's lock-up which had hardly been touched since his sad and untimely death. In it we found an amazing stash of artefacts relating to Rob's history and invovement in Manchester music, whether it relates to one of his bands, Factory Records or the Hacienda. Rob was obviously very particular and kept notebooks and accounts of pretty much everything, from meetings, gigs and any money coming in or going out.

This is a photo from Rob Gretton's archive. It appears that the band record virtually every gig. Here's a load from the mid 1980s. There are a few boxes of these tapes including some early ones although there are quite a few batches of dates missing, which raises the Question where are they?

“What do the red and blue dots to the right of the dates signify, and will there be a full manifest of what tapes exist? --Sam (www.new-order.net/no/gigs)”
“mmmm not sure. i don't know if the dots mean anything. I'll have alook next time i go to the lock up.”
“The 'dots' are just a very small printed "NO." which is on all TDK inserts so you can number your tapes.”
“Which batches of dates are missing? There are probably audience recordings available, particularly if they are UK dates.”
“One batch that is missing are those 1985 gigs that were sold on ebay and now reside in Miami. Just to put an end to the speculation the 'Club D' box you see in the pic proved to have its tape missing, as for the Tokyo tape I can only presume there were two tapes done of this gig.”
“Are there set lists written on the boxes? There's several visible in the photo above and the previos photo that we didn't have any concrete info about, such as Galway 86, Hong Kong 85, both Boston 86 nights (we have the one only), both Toronto 86 nights (again, we have one only), Salt lake City 86, Dallas 86, Buffalo 86, Osaka 6/5/85 (we have different date), the full Santa Monica 85 set. Does the Tokyo tape have the second encore of Sister Ray on it?”
“Only a handful had tracks listed on them, quite a few didn't have any info on them at all! We should in time be able to supply a fair few setlists that were previously unknown, it's still work in progress.”
“I'm happy to help with the chronicling of this if extra hands are required, also got several hundred tapes to donate if needed, (New Order, Joy Div, Fall). including probably all the missing ones from the New Order ones. They're just taking up space here! Will start scanning tickets and setlists tonight.”
“Are those all soundboard recordings, jsz? (I'd give my left nutsack to have that Irvine Meadows tape, if it's from 12 Sept. 1987)”
“All soundboards, and the 12th Sept 87 (the 'infamous' Substance gig) is in there somewhere going by the labelling on them. I haven't confirmed that the recording is ok yet though.”
“There's an audience recording of the Irvine Meadows Substance set doing the rounds, has been since the week after the gig! Audience tapes are often better than the soundboards with New Order, something to do with the amount of gear in the soundboard mix? They also did the Substance set at least one other time on this tour, at Toronto 3rd Sept 87.”
“To answer an earlier question, there's no encore of 'Sister Ray' on the Tokyo tape, also there isn't a tape of the first night so can't confirm if it was played then either.”
