Sad Cafe
The Apollo
1981

I won a competition on Tiswas after Sad Cafe appeared on the programme. The prize was three signed albums and a tour jacket...modelled in this photo by my friend, not me. This photo was taken at the after show party in the Apollo bar.(14/10/81) Paul Young had a mighty voice and charismatic stage presence but half the appeal to us young girlies was the hugs afterwards from our heroes. Oh to be young and star struck again! Paul was a lovely man and is sadly missed by those who admired his talent and his warmth and approachability.

“Sad Cafe performed at the opening ceremony for the original branch of Piccadilly Records - located in Piccadilly Plaza near where the little M&S is now. It must have been mid 70s as I used to buy 1978/79 punk tickets and coloured vinyl 7's from there.

I know this because, in the early 90s I found an old Mcr Evening News advert for the event when ripping up an old carpet. The rest of the page was adverts for hilarious fashions at amusing prices. I dropped it in at the store's second home on Spring Gardens and handed to the lad behind the counter who seemed distinctly unimpressed.

I wonder if it's still held at the new shop on Oldham St?”
