The Smiths
Free Trade Hall
13th March 1984

These pictures were taken using a small Olympus film camera at The Smiths concert (13/3/84) in the Free Trade Hall. I was up in the Circle. Remember it being a great show; Sandie Shaw came on near the end for an encore. I didn’t know much about them at the time but my brother was in the same class as Andy Rourke (& the same year as Johnny Marr) so he recommended this ‘new Manchester band’; pleased I went now!

Saw them once more at that legendary Salford University gig in 1986. No photos from then unfortunately, no doubt my camera would have got crushed amongst all the madness of that night!

“I was wondering if you'd mind if I used this picture in my film? I am making a documentary about lost Manchester music venues and would really appreciate if you could let me know whether it's ok for your photos to appear in the film.

Thank you,

O.”

“Hello

Yes, feel free to use the Smiths photo.

A great lost music venue of the 80's was the 'International 1' on Anson Road junction with Dickenson Rd. Now a Turkish supermarket. It was a fantastic place for gigs and some great bands played there eg REM!

Good luck with your film.

Vince”
