Slaughter and the Dogs, The Worst
1978

In reply to Fran Damans post about the Worst, here's Slaughter and the Dogs playing at the Roxy with a quick glimpse of Alan. Following SATD are Eater whose singer Andy Blade and drummer Dee Generate sadly fail in their attempt to win young butcher of the year.

“Thanks DJ.
There are longer cuts in other punk movies and documentaries. The interesting thing here is that Alan was not at the Slaughter recording at the Roxy! The shots of him are from April 2 1977 when a transit van full on Manchester punks left the Ranch at about 8 in the morning to travel to London to see the Buzzcocks headline at the Roxy. The bill that night was Buzzcocks, Johnny Moped, Wire, X-Ray Spex and Smak. Most of these bands featured on the original Live at the Roxy LP (except Smak who were godawful thankfully I never saw or heard them again).
Also in this video you will see a blond punk girl in black leather mini-skirt dancing. That is Denise a ranch regular who was featured in the "Brass Tacks" documentary on Punk made in Manchester. About sixteen of us crammed into that van including Paul Morley, Joan Juice (featured on Drones picture sleeve), Denise, Alan & Ian from the Worst (the drivers), Steve Shy (of Shy Talk fanzine), Paul (another Mcr proto punk who was in Brass Tacks doc). Pete Shelley joined us for the trip home.
I read online recently that Ian was so out of it that he had no recollection of the trip whatsoever - and he did most of the driving! Heady days.”

“I remember us all being crammed into the back of a little escort van and Ian decided we would avoid the motorway so we did not get stopped by the police. Guess what we were stopped in a country road somewhere by two coppers and they watched with mouths wide open as 14 of us climbed out of the back of the van soaking wet through due to the condensation. We thought that was the end of our trip before it had started but they were so amused by us all that they let us go on. It was one of the best nights of my life at the Roxy with the Manchester crowd. I would love to know who sent this in . Denise”

“Denise I don't know the guy who posted the video but I wrote about our trip. I remember it was Grand National day and you ducked into a bookies in the Kings Road to find out if your horse had won, it was Red Rum and it had!
Remember how we creased up because Poly Styrene looked like a big mushroom in her army helmet!
I remember now that your mate Suzanne ? was with us and two sisters who were both really young and wore matching boiler suits. Joan was piercing peoples ears in the back of the van while we were on the road.
Jon the Postman was supposed to come too, but he took one look in the back of that crowded van outside the Ranch and went home, didn't even give us the sandwiches his Mam had made for him!!”
